Burglaries and antisocial street drinkers update
Antisocial street drinkers:
I’m extremely grateful for the police’s continued efforts to help us following a large number of complaints about people consuming alcohol and causing problems in Morley town centre. As ever, Inspector Mark Lund has been willing to work with me every step of the way, I can’t thank him and the police enough for working with me so closely.
A cohort of 22 people have been identified by the police as being directly involved in (or adjacent to) the antisocial street drinking we’ve seen on Morley precinct.
The following actions have taken place:
Each person has an officer allocated to them who will keep track of their behaviour and progress.
9 Community Protection Warnings (CPW) have been written to some of them instructing them to cease anti-social conduct. 2 more have yet to be served.
1 Community Protection Notice (CPN) has been issued, with 5 more to serve. This is the next stage if a CPW has not been successful in changing an individual's behaviour and they continue to have an adverse impact on the rest of the community.
2 Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBO) have been issued. These prohibits offender from doing anything described in their order, such as banning them from the area for a set time. If they don’t follow the order they can be arrested immediately and charged/sent back to prison. 4 more orders have been applied for.
Burglaries:
Four people are now in prison for burglaries committed in Morley, Drighlington and Gildersome.
The number of businesses targeted in the last 30 days has dropped significantly, to 2. One restaurant and one building site were targeted. The criminal who targeted the restaurant is already in prison.
Inspector Lund agrees that all 4 of these individuals should be subject to CBOs once they are out of prison, banning them from the town. I’ll circulate photos to local businesses as soon as I’m permitted to do so.
New temporary CCTV is being used in an undisclosed town-centre location to catch those who might be tempted to try our businesses again.
And finally...
There will be a significant and sustained police presence over Christmas. Officers will travel in pairs and on foot around our town and our suburbs. Please say hello if you see them and report any and all issues to them.
If you are a business in Leeds South West & Morley and would like to join our Whatsapp Group, please send an email to mark.sewards.mp@parliament.uk with the number you’d like to add to the group.
I’m setting up a quarterly meeting between the police and businesses to try and premempt problems and, as far as possible, prevent this from happening again.
